Welcome to the module on Leadership in Health Professions Education! Health professions education (HPE) leadership is often associated with formal authority positions in HPE institutions. However, all health professions educators, irrespective of their level in the organisation, take on less formal leadership roles on a daily basis where they act as role models to students and junior staff, create effective classroom, clinical or online learning environments, design and implement curricula, perform assessment and evaluation, manage teams, departments and/or programmes, or lead new programme development. It follows that contemporary health professions educators require an expanded competency set, which goes beyond educational expertise, to incorporate scholarship and leadership competencies that enable them to advance the field of HPE and function as educational change agents in volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous (VUCA) HPE contexts.
