Module aim and outcomes

The aim of the module is to equip the student to do independent research from the formulation of a researchable question; through the development of a research proposal; the application of permissions and consent protocols with integrity; and relevant methodologies; data management and interpretation and writing a publishable research assignment.

After completion of the module, the student will be able to apply the theoretical concepts of research methodologies and methods in a research assignment. Specific module objectives are to:

o Identify a study problem and formulate a research question
o Develop an aim and objectives to address the identified problem
o Research ethically: i.e. to understand and to engage with issues of power and politics with integrity in research
o Conduct literature searches, analyse and critique the literature and write a literature review
o Understand methodologies: quantitative and qualitative designs.
o Identify a study population, sample and recruit study participants
o Collect data
o Analyse data
o Apply good scientific writing principles
o Understand the purpose of a research proposal
o Develop a research proposal.
o Submit a completed proposal for research ethics approval.
o Write a research assignment and/or journal article
